Available Positions
Post-doctoral Researchers. We do not have any available post-doctoral positions at this time.
Ph.D. Students. We are always interested in motivated PhD students. As a matter of Georgetown University Department of Chemistry policy, however, faculty may not formally recruit PhD students directly into their research groups, but rather recruit into the Chemistry PhD program as a whole. Only once accepted into the program are PhD students in a position to join a particular research group, and they may join the group of their choice with consent of the chosen mentor. So, the first step is to apply to the program. Click here to learn more about the application process, our competitive graduate student stipend, faculty research interests, and various aspects of our PhD program, in general.
The Holman research group takes on, on average, one-to-two new PhD students each year. If you feel your chances of being accepted into the PhD program are good, and you'd like to initiate a discussion concerning the likelihood of there being an available graduate student position in a given year, feel free to contact Prof. Holman directly.
Undergraduate Students. If you're an undergraduate student majoring and/or interested in synthetic organic, materials, or organoimetallic/coordination chemistry, there are several opportunities available for getting involved in research. One can participate in research on a volunteer basis (get your feet wet; test the waters), for course credit, or--perhaps a more attractive option--you can be compensated for your efforts, depending on funding opportunities. Georgetown University Chemistry majors can earn a certain amount of course credit for their research activities; students enrolled in the Honors program participate in at least three semesters of research for credit, at least one advanced (graduate level) course and write a formal thesis describing their research project. The Honors program provides invaluable experience. In terms of funding, Georgetown students can participate in the Georgetown’s Summer Mentored Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SMURF; formerly GUROP) program, a directly-mentored or supervised summer research opportunity. Recipients work closely with a faculty member in their research or do research alongside a faculty member on a closely-related project. Administered by the Center for Research and Fellowships (CRF), this opportunity offers up to $5,000 to successful applicants.
The Department of Chemistry at Georgetown also offers a limited number of Adam's Fellowships--the financial equivalent of the summer SMURF/GUROP fellowships--for full-time summer research. Please contact Prof. Holman if you think you may be interested in joining the team.
